On a larger scale, though, Kimmel does a great job of considering and explaining the context in which guys live and how societal constructs of masculinity create and sustain most of the abhorrent behaviors we condemn. Kimmel delves into all these questions in a way that really got me thinking–a lot. Specifically, his limited attention to the political and economic interests that are served by the proliferation of Guyland may lead some readers to overlook the capitalist complementarity that serves to maintain many of the problems Kimmel identifies. How can someone with a nine-year-old at the time of writing be that out of touch with kids’ stuff?!

Again, there was some interesting stuff here, and it did get me thinking, but I’m definitely glad to be done reading this one. San Andreas, is not indicative of the videogame libraries in most of these fraternities and apartments.
Why do so many of them fail to launch? Spoiled boys are usually blamed on overindulgent mothers, but Kimmel puts more of the blame on uninvolved or openly encouraging fathers. This was an interesting look at how in our society, boys stay boys for much longer than is healthy, and how their rituals and group behaviors are detrimental to true manhood and society.
That depth of knowledge and academic experience really elevates the book. Parents need to speak up and not coddle their children, and all bceome adults certainly need to tell college guys and girls that hazing and sexual assaults are not tolerated, and support whistle blowers who dare to speak up.

Throughout my four years living in an all-male residence hall at a Christian university, I picked up a few things on the culture present in a male dorm.
He then asserts that similar problems exist with other white men of the same thhe who didn’t go to college but provides little evidence for it. There’s also a culture of silence and intimidation that tries to shut down the conversation when anyone tries to bring it up.
They genuinely don’t know what growing up means and fear that it’s probably a ball and chain on their happiness and freedom and no one is giving them any hints at all. I am never, ever comfortable with this practice even when it is acknowledged in the main body of the text.
But not one of their peers gets this so there’s no help to be found there, and there aren’t enough adults with connections into these groups of overgrown children to model it for them.

Kimmel argues that while the number of institutional spaces dominated perilkus guys may be diminishing, the age spectrum of Guyland itself continues to expand: Feeling loved and supported, nurtured and safe, is far more critical than the ‘package’ it comes in.
