It’s a combination of poor organization it’s hard to figure out at any given point where he is going with things – he makes detours from a antkny chronological account for no apparent reason and excessive, mind-numbing detail in places. What I can tell you is that the Spanish people seem to have been caught in a tussle that would be overrun by external forces and sacrificed at a whim.

The way that they held out against the professional army of the nationalists and their Fascists allies was little short of a miracle. The fact that he has such a big audience is only proof of how quality and quantity is lacking in military history. Instead, Beevor estimates, Franco placed up to half a million Republicans in concentration camps at the end of the war, to slave away in labour battalions for decades.
